Abstract

The compositions, crystal structures and superconducting properties of Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O superconductors were investigated. Nearly single-phase samples of HgBa2CuO4+ δ (Hg-1201) and HgBa2CaCu2O6+ δ (Hg-1212) were obtained. HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+ δ (Hg-1223) phase sample contained impurity phases. High-resolution transmission electron microscopic (HRTEM) studies revealed the existence of the Hg-1201, the Hg-1212, and the Hg-1223 structures. The Tc’s of Hg-1201, Hg-1212 and Hg-1223 phases as determined from the DC susceptibility were 96K, 127K and 134K, respectively. These samples showed superconductivity with ~ 15% of the diamagnetic volume fraction at 5K.
