Abstract

A novel phase of Au0.5Nb0.5 is synthesized as a thin film using magnetron sputter deposition. A ‘‘multilayer’’ process is used to create an artificial superlattice by an atomic plane‐by‐plane alternation between Au and Nb. Resistivity measurements indicate the 0.32 μm thin film is superconducting at 2.5 K. Microstructure is determined using x‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The Au0.5Nb0.5 thin film has a body‐centered‐cubic structure which extends well beyond the limits of the reported, Nb terminal solid solution.
