Abstract
Abstract New complexes of lanthanide nitrates with N-(2-pyridyl) benzamide (PyBA) of the type [Ln(PyBA)2](NO3)3 where Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Tb, Ho, Er, Yb and Y have been prepared and characterised by analysis, conductance, infrared, carbon-13 NMR and electronic spectral studies. The molar conductance and infrared data point to the coordinated nitrate groups in the complexes. Infrared and carbon-13 NMR have been interpreted in terms of the coordination of the ligand to the tripositive lanthanide ion, in a bidentate fashion, through the oxygen of the benzamide group and the nitrogen of the pyridine ring. Electronic spectral shapes have been interpreted in terms of ten coordinate geometry around the lanthanide ion.
