Abstract

New complexes of lanthanide nitrates with 3,4-methylenedioxybenzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone having the general formula [Ln(LH) 2(NO 3) 2]NO 3 (where Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb and Y) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic measurements, electronic, infrared, 1H NMR, fluorescence spectra and thermal studies. Molar conductance studies indicate 1 : 1 electrolytic behaviour for these compelxes. The spectral studies show that two thiosemicarbazone ligands and two nitrate groups are bound to the lanthanide ion in a bidentate fashion. TG and DTA studies indicate that these complexes are stable up to 255°C and do not contain water or alcohol molecules.
