Abstract

Shape amphiphilicity is one of the possible ways to induce novel mesogeni c biaxiality. Amphiphilic mole-cules consist of two incompatible parts by their chemical nature such as hydrophilic/hydrophobic, stiff/flexible, aliphatic/con-jugated aromatic, and polar (polarizable)/non-polar (non-polar-izable). For instance, semifluo rinated alkanes (SFA) contain two different segments within th eir molecules, namely a hydro-carbon and a perfluorocarbon fragment. Mahler
