Abstract

1,3-dihydro-4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2H-indol-2-one, an important intermediate in the synthesis of ropinirole, was synthesized, characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and element analysis, and the crystal structure was confirmed by X-ray crystal structure analysis. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic class space group P21/c with cell parameters, a = 7.3830(15) A, b = 12.318(3) A, c = 9.4801(19)(8) A; β = 92.76(3)o, and Z = 4. The structure exhibits intermolecular hydrogen bonds and weak π···π interaction leading to the formation of a three-dimensional network structure.
