Abstract

Two fluoro-substituted neutral carbene silver acetates and thirteen cationic dicarbene silver complexes were synthesised from the appropriate imidazolium precursors in good to very good yields using batch and flow synthesis. Six of the derivatives were characterised by XRD and showed expected structural aspects in the solid state. Most of these fifteen new silver-based antimicrobial drug candidates showed improved stability as well as comparable biological activity against E. coli and Methicillin-resistant S. aureus when compared against the lead compound 1,3-dibenzyl-4,5-diphenylimidazol-2-ylidene silver(I) acetate (SBC3). Fluoro-substitution as well as the use of dicarbene complexes have the potential to develop the field of silver-based antimicrobials further.
