Abstract

Some novel Chalcones including 3-((E)-3-substituted phenylacryloyl)benzonitriles have been synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt condensation of aryl methyl ketones including 3-acetylbenzonitrile and substituted benzaldehydes. All the synthesized compounds have been characterized by their physical constants, UV, IR, 1H, 13C NMR and Mass spectral data. These spectral data of functional groups and chemical shifts of these 3-benzonitrile chalcones have been correlated with Hammett substituent constants, F and R parameters using single and multi-linear regression analyses. From the results of statistical analysis, the effect of substituents on the functional group absorptions was discussed.
