Abstract
Two tetrachlorocuprate(II) salts with substituted methyl pyridinium, [Bz-2-MePy]2[CuCl4] (1) and [Bz-4-MePy]2[CuCl4] (2) ([Bz-2-MePy]+ = 1-benzyl-2′-methylpyridinium; [Bz-4-MePy]+ = 1-benzyl-4′-methylpyridinium), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared (IR), mass spectroscopy (MS), and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Compound 1 crystallizes in the tetragonal system with space group P4/n, while compound 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with space group Pna21. The [CuCl4]2− anion in 1 and 2 exhibits a distorted tetrahedron geometry. Some weak hydrogen bonds such as C--H···Cl, and N--H···Cl between the anion and cation were observed in 1 and 2. In addition, two salts show good antibacterial activities for Colibacillus and Aurococcus.
