Abstract

This study evaluates the β-mannosidase activity of serum and synovial fluid. Sixty simultaneous samples of serum and synovial fluid were studied in addition to 232 synovial fluid samples obtained from a variety of arthropathic conditions. The response of this enzyme to intra-articular steroids and its relationship to synovial fluid cell count was also evaluated. The results suggest that only in inflammatory arthropathies does synovial fluid β-mannosidase activity equal or exceed serum levels, and that proliferating synovial tissue may well be a local source of β-mannosidase activity.
