Abstract

Purpose: Synovial cells contribute to osteoarthritis (OA) onset and progression, releasing and responding to multiple pro-inflammatory mediators and extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading enzymes. The quest for true disease status biomarkers in OA is still open and the identification of these factor combinations can have diagnostic and prognostic value. The study objective was to conduct a systematic literature review to establish if published study data, when combined in a meta-analysis, can identify synovial biomarkers which are statistically significant in human OA synovial tissue, compared to healthy/non-OA patients, thereby providing an indication of disease status.
