Abstract

Synergistic effect caused by combining Pd and the first-series transition metal oxides was investigated in the oxidation of CO and methane. A catalyst obtained by impregnating PdCl2 on Mn203 followed by washing and reduction at 300°C had trie highest activity, oxidizing CO completely at 90°c and initiating low temperature oxidation of methane. Pd was highly dispersed on Mn203, and its surface was covered with a thin oxide layer after the reaction. Temperature programmed reduction analysis indicated that the lattice oxygen of Mn203 was removed easily at a low temperature in the presence of Pd.
