Abstract

There is marked synergism in the extraction of vanadium(IV) in the presence of both salicylic acid and nitrogen containing organic bases (pyridine, picolines, quinoline, isoquinoline and o-phenanthroline). This synergistic enhancement is found to be due to the displacement of water from the coordination sphere by the base, or solvent in the case of alcohol. The extraction and formation constants and the effectiveness of the various bases as synergists have been compared.
