Abstract

An analytical procedure is proposed to calculate the compliances of planar-motion notch flexure hinges with transverse or/and axial symmetry by employing base segments of known compliances. Mirroring, translation, and serial combination of individual segments are used to obtain the flexure hinge compliances that are necessary to evaluate its capacity of deformation and precision of rotation. Two case studies are illustrated: one derives the compliances of the known right circular flexure hinge while the other introduces a new flexure hinge with both axial and transverse symmetry. For the latter flexure design, the numeric values of compliances are confirmed by finite element simulation.
