Abstract

A novel method of signal analysis, symbolic dynamics, is employed to model highly varying electrical loads. The potential for application of forecast future load currents is used to conceptually design a power conditioner. Symbolic dynamics is based on the coding of signals as symbols, which appear in groups known as words. A symbolic dynamic dictionary is formed from historical time series data. The words and the symbols themselves are treated much as they might in a natural language. An application to the modeling of an electric arc furnace and the load current conditioning of an arc furnace current is given.
