Abstract
Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Tohokukai Mental Hospital has provided support to resolve alcohol-related problems in the disaster-stricken areas of Miyagi Prefecture, as we assumed that alcohol consumption and alcohol-related problems might increase in the disaster areas as a reaction to disaster-related stress. Because no other hospital with specialized treatment programs for alcoholism exists, other than the Tohokukai Mental Hospital, and because the number of mutual aid groups is limited in Miyagi coastal areas, it is difficult to assess the severity of alcohol-related problems and to resolve alcohol-related issues within the Miyagi coastal areas. In this presentation, I would like to report the following: (1) changes in alcohol-use disorders at our hospital before and after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and (2) support that we have provided for alcohol-related problems in distressed areas, particularly the effect of a ‘group approach.’
