Abstract

A method to evaluate the inherent switchability of a process design, that is its ability to move between operating points, is proposed in this paper. This requires the solution of an optimal control problem to determine the optimum trajectory of the manipulated variables for the switch and the optimal value of any design parameters. End point constraints are required so that steady state is reached and path constraints to ensure that product purities are maintained throughout the switch.
