Abstract

Abstract ‘Silver Queen’ sweet corn was planted 30 May to a Hagerstown silt loam field. Plots were 4 rows × 50 ft arranged in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. Insecticides were applied 9, 23, 29 Aug using a Hi-Boy tractor equipped with a spray boom set to deliver 30 gal per acre. At harvest, 100 ears were selected from each treatment and evaluated for signs of insect feeding externally (silks and sides) and internally (kernels and ear tips). Numbers of FAW, CEW and ECB were counted. Stalk damage caused by ECB was assessed by cutting 10 plants per plot splitting the stalks and counting the number of cavities. Data were analyzed using a square root transformation where appropriate. Rainfall totalled 2.33 inch for Jun, 4.40 inch for Jul and 2.76 inch for Aug. Average maximum and minimum daily temperature (°F) were 80.8 and 45.6 for Jun, 85 and 51.8 for Jul, and 86.8 and 51 for Aug.
