Abstract
Sweden has had a national pension scheme since 1914. It has developed over time and is now a notional defined pension system after a decision in parliament in 1994. The supplementary pension schemes have a long history and some of them started already before the national pension system and have later developed in response to the establishment and the changes in that system. All of the supplementary pension schemes are now also notional defined pension schemes. The third part of the pension system in Sweden is the private pensions. They are important for some groups. In all parts of the pension system part-time pension is an option. In recent years changes have made to encourage people to retire at a higher age including an increase of the mandatory retirement age and by making it more difficult to take up an early pension or a disability pension.
