Abstract

Svante August Arrhenius was born on February 19, 1859, near Upsala, his father being connected with the University. He completed the period of undergraduate work in 1876, and in 1884 received the degree of Doctor of Science in the University of Upsala, being immediately after that elected Docent in the same institution. In the meantime he had been working experimentally in the Physical laboratory of the Academy of Sciences at Stockholm under Edlund, who procured him a scholarship from the Academy that he might carry on his studies in foreign countries. Thereafter he worked in the laboratories of Ostwald (Riga, later Leipsic), Kohlrausch (Würzburg), Boltzmann (Graz), and van't Hoff (Amsterdam). During this time he perfected the details of the theory of electrolytic dissociation, of which we find the first development in his doctor dissertation (1884). In 1891, he was appointed teacher of physics in the free university (Högskola) of Stockholm, and in 1895, he was promoted to the professorship in physics. During 1897–1902, he was rector of the university.
