Abstract

This paper describes some of the challenges that the concept of service life of suspension bridges pose to owners of major bridge crossings that operate in an urban environment such as New York City. Discussion is based on the authors' involvement on the 4 suspension bridges owned and operated by MTA Bridges and Tunnels. Influences on service life are discussed, as is the apparent link among truck weight, changes in truck size and weight regulations, and bridge service life. Next, a research program carried out by the Authority for predicting the remaining useful life of bridge cables is outlined. The authors conclude by identifying areas where further development in engineering could benefit owners.
