Abstract

Between 1792 and year II, military operations following the enemy invasion bring to Douai numerous refugees, soliers and vagrants. The presence in Douai, seat of the dapartment's «directoire», causes both unrest and disquiet. The city police court interrogates all these suspects and the records of these proceedings enable us today to catch a glimpse of the everyday life of the population in Douai as well as in the surrounding countryside, and also in Valenciennes during the siege and under the Austrian occupation. Dumouriez's betrayal and the moods thus aroused among both officers and rank and file can also be felt. This series of documents shows how upsetting the Revolution was for our regions when war was added to the mutations already under way.
