Abstract
It was with unease that I read the letter by R G Forbes (Physics Bulletin March 1978 p103) which called for a more systematic approach to the physical quantities which relate electric and magnetic field properties. Having accepted the definitions of μ0 and 0, the permeability and permittivity of free space in the SI mkgs A system, then the familiar equations B=μ0(H + M) and D=0E + P follow quite logically.
