Abstract

SUMMARY The incidence of trypanosomes and of trypanosomal antibodies was investigated in ten species of mammals, one species of bird and one species of reptile. Salivarian trypanosomes were demonstrated in bushbuck, defassa waterbuck, and African elephant. The trypanosome isolated from the African elephant was found to bear a strong resemblance to Trypanosoma elephantis , Bruce et al. , 1909. Isolates of brucei sub-group trypanosomes from two bushbuck were found uninfective to man. The significance and efficacy of the four serological tests used are discussed.
