Abstract

Surgical research at three Air Force facilities has been described. Significant clinical investigation can be carried out by any Air Force surgeon motivated to do so and who takes advantage of available opportunities. Clinical observations concerning a number of troublesome surgical problems can be made with a minimum amount of outside support. For more elaborate research projects, a mechanism exists in Air Force Regulation 169-6 to provide support and approval. It is the policy and intention of the Air Force Medical Corps to provide a climate conducive to fulfillment of both the Air Force mission and maximum professional achievement and satisfaction by Air Force surgeons. This policy provides research opportunities both for career Air Force Medical Corps officers and for reserve officers serving two years on active duty. Questions concerning Air Force surgical research programs should be directed to Lt. Colonel Homer Woolsey, Office of the Surgeon General, Headquarters USAF, Washington, D.C. 20025.
