Abstract

Risk management often deals with events that occur at a low rate. Until recently, these rates have been primarily the subject of speculation, conjecture or estimation based on small studies. As new evidence comes in, the rates may become known with more precision. Minnesota has implemented legislation to track adverse events in surgery and the rates correlate with earlier studies on adverse events in surgery. While these rates are low, the effect on the patient and the hospital can be devastating. If health care is going to get to root causes, it will need large databases in order to analyze patterns and trends.
