Abstract

This paper focuses on the behavior of low-molecular-weight surfactant molecules in latex films and how their distribution may influence coalescence and other film properties. Using recently developed spectroscopic non-destructive analytical tools, quantitative assessments concerning surfactant distribution and their interactions with latex components will be presented. Particular efforts will be given to recent developments in quantitative analysis using attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and step-scan photoacoustic (S 2-PAS) Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy.
