Abstract

AbstractSurface‐initiated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerisation of styrene was conducted from the surface of Laponite clay particles. A new cationic chain transfer agent, 2‐(2‐(butylthio‐carbonothioylthio)propanoyloxy)‐N,N,N‐trimethylethanaminium iodide was synthesised and attached to the clay surface from which polymerisation was initiated. A free RAFT agent, ethyl 2‐(butylthiocarbonothioylthio)propanoate was added in solution to control the polymerisation of free polymer. The grafted and free polymer were then analysed by SEC to get insight into the polymerisation. The thermal stability of the polymer/clay nanocomposites and grafted clay particles was investigated by TGA.
