Abstract

Calculations on surface wind energy density available per annum over eastern Greece, based on about 30 years of wind data, imply that Aeolian energy is a promissing renewable natural energy source in this part of the world. The wind power density available in the central Aegean basin is estimated to be of comparable magnitude to the wind power available over most of the north-west coast of England and of comparable magnitude to the solar energy density availability in Greece. It is estimated that about 800 medium size windmills can produce the total electric energy consumed in the Aegean islands and Crete.
