Abstract
A general expression for calculating the average number of photogenerated carriers in a photoconductor has been worked out. Based on this work, it is proposed that the effect of surface recombination is to influence the quantum efficiency of the photoconductor rather than the bulk-carrier lifetime. A modified quantum efficiency expression, which includes the surface recombination velocities of both surfaces of photoconductor, is reported.
