Abstract

In order to fully exploit the advantages of speed-stroke surface grinding characterized by high workpiece speed with small depth of cut, a grinding machine with a linear-motor-driven table system was developed. The maximum table speed and acceleration achieved were 60 m/min and 1.0 G, respectively. The paper describes the results of a performance test of the machine during the idling phase and a speed-stroke grinding test. These tests confirmed that the developed surface grinding machine was able to meet the intended design specification in terms of grinding force and ground surface quality.
