Abstract
A half rhenium coated impregnated scandate cathode has been studied using Auger spectroscopy and scanning emission microscopy. It was found that coverage with oxygen, barium and scandium was far greater for the uncoated side, that its mean work function was lower and that the tests gave results very similar to those for B-type cathodes. The results are discussed in the light of a possible method of operation of the scandate cathode.
