Abstract

Samples of α- and β-spodumene treated at various milling periods were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Determinations of points of zero charge (PZC) were made by means of titration curves of the samples. The PZCs obtained evidenced immediate alteration of the crystalline structure at the mechanical treatment time sequences for both types of spodumene (α and β). Aluminium and silicon distribution on the surface (up to 100 Å depth) did not show any significant differences between samples α 0 and β 0. The lithium increase in β 0 has been attributed to structural differences. Mechanical treatment caused an increase in Al 2 p , Si 2 p and Li 1 s photoelectron peak intensities for sample α 50 together with a shift in Al 2 p binding energy from 0.6 eV towards lower values. This has been ascribed to aluminium oxide formation on the surface.
