Abstract
Objectives: After implantation of a small diameter vascular prosthesis, tissue factor (TF), present either at anastomotic sites or on platelet deposits on the graft surface, provides a source for thrombin generation with an attendant risk of graft thrombosis. We have postulated that the combination of surface immobilized thrombomodulin (TM) and heparin will provide an effective strategy for inhibiting TF-initiated thrombin generation. Methods: Tissue factor along with thrombomodulin and heparin were immobilized in spatially restricted zones as components of a membrane-mimetic film.
