Abstract

The content and distribution of metallic ions on the surface of gold-plated brass screwposts (Dentatus and MecOdont) were analyzed by X-ray microanalysis. On screwposts from one of the manufacturers the protective outer layer of gold was found to be localized to specific areas of the posts, i.e. the grooves, while unprotected Cu-Zn alloy was found on the ridges. The results are discussed with regard to results on root posts published earlier. Screwposts constructed in this way would appear to be of doubtful clinical value.
