Abstract
Abstract Surf-zone diatom populations occurring along the west coast of the Olympic Peninsula, State of Washington, are quite comparable to similar surf-zone populations along the west coast of North Island, New Zealand. In both locations, Chaetoceros armatum T. West contributes the predominant biomass. Asterionella glacialis Castracane (formerly called A. japonica Cleve ex Gran) frequently occurs with Ch. armatum in the surf zone along the New Zealand coast. Along the Washington coast, Asterionella socialis, a species newly described in this paper, accompanies Ch. armatum in the surf zone. Photographs of these species are included along with details of cell morphology.
