Abstract

A census of 1786, covering about a Fifth of the population, or some 29,500 inhabitants, notes the occupations of the heads of families. Agricultural workers and shepherds make up 58,6 %. More than 11 %, presumably rural notables, admit to no form of work. Half the artisans are concentrated in the densely populated and industrialised Castagniccia. The poor and the beggars — 2 % of the whole — are mostly found in large agricultural villages without common lands. Dorothy Carington.
