Abstract

At times... fun also occurs on the tiers of a stadium. Jests and scoffing around football grounds. How far is the importance of fun in a great football contest ? The author first studies funny situations generated by the practice of this sport and — by comparing the reactions of spectators in Marseilles, Naples and Turin — notices that the taste for fun in the game is in keeping with local "turns of minds". Next he examines the devices (parody, emphasis, puns both on words and meaning) which make up the pattern of football supporters' jesting rhetorics. Lastly he wonders about the meaning and the part played by these comic or scoffing attitudes : they both establish — through the serious themes they conjure up in a corrosive way — and lessen — through the distanciation of laughter and smiling — the dramatic intensity of the contest.
