Abstract

Fractures of the distal humerus in elderly people with osteoporotic bone are rare compared to the common fractures of the proximal humerus. Due to the bad functional results of conservative treatment - the osteosynthesis of the distal humerus is the method of choice in these fractures. There are special rules that have to because of the often very severe osteoporotic changes special rules apply to the osteosynthesis. This is i.e. the implantation of longer plates with more screws to increase stability. Other forms of osteosynthesis should be considered, too, i.e. the double tension band osteosynthesis on the ulnar and radial column with only little devastation of the blood supply to the bone. In addition to the description of the technique of the operative treatment and of the results, we do describe the limitation of the osteosynthesis of the fractures of the distal humerus in elderly people and the workaround in these cases.
