Abstract

Based on the Heisenberg equations of motion for the electron orbital andspin degrees of freedom in two-dimensional electronic systems with bothRashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings, we show that an acelectric field can cause an ac spin Hall current in such asystem. In contrast to some previous theoretical prediction, the spin Hallcurrent will be suppressed completely in the dc limit. We argue that thesuppression of dc spin Hall currents in such a system is actually a muchnatural result of the dynamic spin evolution due to the combined action of adc external electric field and the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling.
