Abstract
Additional equipment has been incorporated into anaesthesia machines to prevent accidents occurring. Fail-safe devices and O2 analysers ensure that the gas delivered is adequately oxygenated. Inadequate ventilation, related to disconnection or dysfunction of the ventilator, can be detected by pressure and volume monitoring by the anaesthesia machine. Pulse oximetry and capnography are non-invasive methods that continuously monitor patients' gas exchange. They are now part of the basic equipment used to monitor every anaesthetized patient.
