Abstract

The needs of such students are now well established, not necessarily through detailed research, more through rules of thumb resulting from the experience of institutions such as The Open University, the National Extension College and their overseas equivalents. In the 1980s the then Council for Educational Technology Open Learning Systems project commissioned Graham Gibbs, of The Open University, to produce a report setting out the key stages in an open learning student's career. This, together with experience current at the time, led to the framework set out in How to Tutor and Support Learners (Lewis, 1984). The key stages were identified as: • before the course • entry to the course • early days on the course • mid-course • examinationlleaving point • after the course.
