Abstract

Open and distance learning universities are started with the objective to reach the masses of society that otherwise remain unreached in reference to higher education. It is a common belief that open and distance learning universities are only for faculty of arts and education and commerce and management, but with the dawn of the last century, now the paradigm is shifting. Now in science streams, not only computer science and mathematics but also subjects like botany, zoology, chemistry, physics, geography and even biotechnology which needs lots of practical hands-on training are successfully attracting the attention of the society. More and more learners are interested in enrolling in Science–Schools/departments of Open Universities for getting higher education in their respective fields. This practice is definitely encouraging for open and distance universities, but it is a challenge for ODL system to maintain quality of science education as they need more attention. In the present scenario, this challenge can be successfully achieved only due to the technological advancement. As in ODL universities, students generally don’t think about classroom teaching, but science subjects need face-to-face interaction, so the universities have to fulfill course content with some projects, assignments, camps, video lectures, question bank, e-learning texts, practical counseling sessions, etc. These practices will definitely improve quality of science stream courses for learners of ODL system. The objective of the chapter is to cover various aspects of science education like Introduction of ODL System is discussing open and distance education system and its expanding dimensions. Technological Advancement in Education Sector is revealing use of the Internet, Web, Open Educational Resources, and use of different media like radio, television, computer, mobiles as education technology. Use of Technology by Vardhman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU) in Dissemination of Science Education is including various aspects like Approaching Learners, Admission Process, Development of Self-learning Material and other learning supports, Evaluation Pattern and Examination Cell, Delivery of SLM to Learners, Practical Counseling and Practical Examination, Monitoring of Learning and Examination Centers, Research programs in Science Stream. Role of Technology in Extending Learner Support Services in VMOU is emphasizing academic and non-academic support to learners provided by the University. Best Technological Practices followed by VMOU is including Effective use of Mobiles, Educational Media Production Center, E-Learning, School of Science and Technology, E-Filing, and automation of Central Library. Challenges Faced by VMOU in Implementations of Technology is discussing the general aspect related to technology implementation in a university. The present chapter deals with major issues that emphasize role of technology for dissemination of science education through open and distance universities in the reference of Vardhman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU).
