Abstract

Cotherapy can be a rewarding or devasting experience, depending on the extent of planning and degree of assessment of therapists' compatibility of styles and orientations. Current attitudes and perceptions about cotherapy are identified as well as specific situations that lead to conflict. Techniques for preventing and resolving conflict are covered. The role of using theory, engaging in self-monitoring, and handling patient responses in overcoming conflict are presented. Theoretical points are discussed in relation to empirical findings from a survey of therapists.
