Abstract

Whether or not Management by Objectives (MBO) is the management system being implemented in a given organization, the social work supervisor can incorporate the concepts and procedures of MBO to fulfill his middle management responsibilities. Supervision by Objectives (SBO) is advanced as the supervisor's contribution to accountability and the legitimization of achievement in the delivery of social services. The discussion addresses types of objectives, establishing objectives, guidelines for writing objectives, and advantages and disadvantages. Specific examples of objectives are given throughout, and complete SBOs are provided.
