Abstract
Supervision of midwifery is a statutory responsibility and most midwives are able to gain access to and support from their supervisor relatively easily. However, for midwives working outside the NHS it can be problematic to get appropriate supervision from a midwife who understands their role and subsequent needs. While the debate over the framework of statutory midwifery supervision continues into the future, supervisors and midwives need to uphold the principles of individualized safe midwifery care for women and to respect the lessons to be learnt by all practising midwives, including those practising outside the NHS.
