Abstract

Superposition of fundamental solutions is used to find temperature and heat flux distributions in gray walled two-dimensional rectangular enclosures with a gray absorbing-emitting, isotropically scattering medium. The fundamental solutions are temperature and heat flux distributions for enclosures with black boundaries and a step change in temperature over a finite wall interval. They are found using a variation of the conventional zonal method. Detailed heat flux and temperature distributions for basic cases are presented to illustrate the simplicity of the superposition procedure. Based on these results, the effects of surface boundary conditions on the temperature distribution and heat transfer are discussed.
