Abstract

The authors discuss modifications of the internal architecture of production systems (PSs) that could significantly increase the execution performance of PS shells. This increased efficiency is achieved primarily by modifications to the matching step of the execution cycle. Rather than checking all possible instantiations, the authors propose to consider those potential instantiations ordered by the conflict resolution strategy, and fire the first instantiation found. The increased execution efficiency provided by this matching strategy would be compounded by modifying the OPS5 conflict resolution strategies. The authors propose a goal-directed (look-ahead) conflict resolution strategy which will still retain the responsiveness emphasized by OPS5. >
