Abstract

Below ~ 1 atm oxygen pressure, superheating in the oxygen combustion of thin aluminum strands is very pronounced. Ignition difficulties of thin Al strands at low oxygen pressures result from extreme superheating which is followed by explosive self-extinguishment of the molten-metal ball formed on the end of the strand.
