Abstract

The misfit layer compounds (MS) n TS 2, M = Bi, Pb, Sn, La, Sm and T = Nb, Ta, which form a family of highly two-dimensional electronic systems, are investigated by specific heat and susceptibility measurements. All compounds become superconducting above 70 mK, except for M = La, Sm. The M = Pb, Sn species behave as 3-d BCS superconductors. (BiS) 1.08TaS 2 shows two-dimensional fluctuations above T c in both specific heat and susceptibility measurements. We interpret these results in the light of differences in valence states of the metal atom in the MS layer.
